Scope and Content

From the Collection: The account book is probably from a store in the Las Vegas, NM area. The book itself came from C. L. Hernandez & Co. Post Office News Stand in Las Vegas. Some of the individuals detailed with accounts appear in the 1900 census as residents of the community of Los Vigiles, located northwest of Las Vegas, NM.

The account book records merchandise transactions, including customer name, items purchased, price for each item, and the total bill. Purchases include coffee, sugar, flour, chile, beans, lard, potatoes, sweets, cheese, sardines, meat, matches, candles, tobacco, shoes, clothing, books, farm supplies, and the like. The merchant occasionally made small loans of money to customers and handled loans or debts between customers. All entries are in Spanish.
