Scope and Contents
Viceregal decrees relating to land grants, organization of local government, Indian affairs, etc. This branch includes records of grant lands and warrants for lands, farms, etc. Confirmations and cancellations of grants, licenses various permits, fees to visit villages, roads and orders to apprehend vagrants. In addition there are orders to perform compositions of land, changes in titles and deeds, allotments of vacant land and parcels, repeal of ordinances, appointments of treasurers, clerks, governors and mayors, bans on selling wine to the Indians, collecting the tribute of some estates, mistreating the Indians. Also there are reports about the treatment of Indians, encroachment on their lands, and return of lands to them. Entire volume reproduced – microfilm, 249 frames. - Among the themes - permits to Indians and Negros for carrying arms, using horses, trumpets. Local officials support Spaniard for searching for escaped Negro slaves, at his expense. Permits for Indians for trading, traveling for business. Permits to Spaniards for traveling to Spain, taking a Negro slave woman to Spain. Grants of horse lands to Spaniards, pastures, next to their estancias. Grants of land to Indians for homes, communities, fields, horse lands, cattle grazing, Indians given permits for places to sell their goods, Indians have mines, silk business. Protecting Indian lands from Spanish encroachment, ejidos, baldios. Repartimiento, labor - Indians paid to work on public wharf, government buildings. Indians paid if provide food for Spanish officials. Spaniards not to make contracts, do business with Indians, no wine in Indian villages. Resolution of land grants, conflicts, without injury to third parties.Application of royal ordinances, mesta regulations, obrajes, roads, etc. Granting of encomiendas, inheritance issues, women receiving land dowry in marriage. Local Indian elections, own officials, governments, Indian officials to be independent of Spanish interference, Indians take residencias of Indian officials. Role of caciques, Indian governors, succession in family, inheritance, Indian officials use vara de justicia. Spanish miner owners provide funds support for Indian hospitals. Spanish encomenderos provide funds for monasteries. Grant to Spaniard to print books of catechism and science.
