Scope and Contents

From the Series: Folder in Box 21 (overize photostats, two copies) and Reel 69 both contain Oñate material only, not the other expedition, from AGI, Patronato, Sevilla, Simancas. They are not the same, consult both. Pages are in Spanish, hand written in contemporary script, transcription from documents so are easy to read. Folder has a short report on successes of Onate, 1599. The reel has a series of questions asked and recorded by el factor Francisco de Valverde y Mercado, 1602 to those on the expedition telling what they saw. Onate exploration to the North, Great Plains, carts, roads, discoveries, missionaries, activities, descriptions, conditions, Pecos Pueblo, Galisteo Pueblo, rivers, meeting Indians, Native Americans, names of their groups, population, Apaches vaqueros, native clothing, hides, use of dogs, food, tobacco, women, houses, peace with Spanish, salt, weapons, Humanos, Jumanos, use of sign language, tattoos, ties, trade of Plains Indians by Taos Pueblo and Picuris Pueblo, finding cibola, bison, buffalos, Indio Miguel, de Mexico, Juan Rodrigues, Portuguese, etc. Also a series of questions asked about the merits of Vicente de Zaldivar, Maese de Campo for Onate. Reel 69 also has the Enrico Martinez map of New Mexico in the time of Onate, 1602 - map at beginning of reel.
