Clara Lee Tanner, 1989

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 28

Scope and Contents

Notes: Professor Tanner is speaking clearly. She is from the University of Arizona, and was a judge at the Gallup Indian Intertribal Ceremonial craft show. She is giving a lecture and discusses changes in basket designs over the years and new trends in modern times. Evidently, she and Sally are looking at a display of baskets brought to the Gallup Indian Ceremonial and discussing different ones - as to daily or ceremonial use, weaving and sewing techniques, materials, grasses, yucca, devils claw, dessert willow, water jar baskets, water proof - piñon pitch baskets, coiled and wicker, horizontal and vertical patterns, human and animal images, split stitching, colors, vegetable and commercial aniline dyes, dyes introduced by Mary Colton, etc. Among the Southwest Native American weaving groups mentioned are Hopi, Navajo, Pima, Papago, Apache, Ute, etc.
