Scope and Contents

Summary of notes: Katherine is the mother of Sally Noe. After getting a business education, Katherine returned to Gallup and had jobs in the offices of the Gallup Mercantile Store, the Cotton store, Gross Kelly, the Merchants Bank, the Wallace store, etc. and knew of the Kirks, Kennedys, Fred Harvey, etc. In the stores she worked in accounting, pricing, etc. and dealt with the Navajo weavers and teamsters, post traders, handled wool, livestock, rugs, pottery, fruit, vegetables, etc. She describes the Navajo drivers bringing in the wagons to the store and that they were very trustworthy. She also worked at the Zuni trading post and described trading with the Zuni women jewelry makers, who didn’t like dealing with White women - only men and like her. She recalls seeing the Zuni scalp dance and Santo Niño doll dance. She handled the ration stamp program at the Gallup Mercantile Store during World War II. Later she was the first woman to run a store in Gallup.
