Scope and Contents
Summary of transcript: Julian Grenko and his family operated the Grenko Coal Company, the first to unionize in the Gallup area - United Mine Workers Union, 1933. He comments on mining during the Depression and the miners’ hours, pay and demands. Grenko family members also worked at other mines and consolidated their business efforts to survive. He discussed the Sunshine Mine, Allison Mine, U.S. Mining Company, Santa Rita Mine, Weaver Mine (fire) and others. He compares mining practices in Iowa to those in New Mexico. He also recalls life in Gallup, driving cars around town and picking up dates, his marriage and later years working for the city as a welder.
