Scope and Contents
Summary of Notes Throughout the tape there is a high pitched squealing sound but the narrator’s voice is quite good. There is a lull in the beginning. Olga Baird tells about her father, an immigrant, who became a miner and independent contractor in Gallup. She married Gene Baird, who at different times ran several trading posts on the Navajo reservation. She tells about the life of a White woman surviving on the reservation at Sawmill and Ft. Defiance, the local foods, relations with the Navajos, raising her children, schooling, entertainment and bad roads. She recalled the Orson Welles 1938 radio broadcast about extraterrestrials landing on Earth and the story of a Navajo man she knew who became a soldier in World War II and the problems he had.
