LUKE NICHOLS BUILDING HOUSES, 1996-2012

 File — Box: 183

Scope and Contents

Black album with LIVE * LAUGH * LOVE on the cover. 79 color photos in this album. My son Luke is a builder. He learned his trade building earthships for Mike Reynolds in Taos, Japan, Texas, Montana, Colorado. This album has a couple shots of one of his first dwellings, circa 1986. Construction of another house down in Pilar; a third house he worked on with John Hunt in Arroyo Hondo; and many photos of his building an earthship on a cliff for himself at the "Reach" Community in Valdez just north of Arroyo Seco between 1998 and 2000. Featured are pictures of my cousin Libby Troy and her hubby, Dick Troy, and their daughter, Robin, visiting Luke's "Reach" house on July 26, 1998, and then a raucous celebration of my 58th. birthday later that day at my home on Valverde Street with Dick, Libby (my 1st cousin, daughter of my dad's brother John), and Robin Troy, Marco and Tania Harris, Luke and Ruby Nichols. Luke's earthship has a view of the entire western half of New Mexico. Final 14 photos show the stages of construction of a super shed Luke built for me to house my voluminous archives the summer of 2012. He'd built another shed just like it nearby for me in which, for years, I kept 12 four-drawer legal-size file cabinets filled with archival correspondence that finally, in 2012, went to the Center for Southwest Research at UNM's Zimmerman Library.
