LIVING TREASURES AWARD, TAOS, 1988

 Item — Box: 180, DVD: 6

Scope and Contents

This program is narrated by Taos sculptor, Ted Egri. It honors Pete Concha, cacique of Taos Pueblo; Andrés Martínez, former head of Tres Ríos Association; Kathleen Summit. Taos Mayor Larry Santistevan reads proclamations. Pete Concha's newphew says words about Pete, then sings songs for him with drum. Then Robert Mirabal talks about going on Peace Walk in Russia. And importance of Pueblo cacique. He plays flute honoring all grandparents at the Pueblo while Pete Concha listens and never cracks a smile. Then Pete actually says a few words. Lovely words. Thank you from bottom of my heart. He is old and sweet. So is Andrés Martínez old, he's 90. Larry Santistevan reads a proclamation for Andrés. Bernabé Chávez comes up and speaks on behalf of Andrés. He's really old, too. A wonderful man. Says Andrés's better known in Ranchos de Taos as Andrecito. Tells about Andres's childhood in Ranchos. People from Ranchos are called "cebolleros." It's a very long talk. After about a half hour Bernabé gets into the San Juan-Chama Diversion Project. And talks about the Tres Ríos Association, the fight against Indian Camp Dam and the Conservancy District. Credits Andrés with being a great leader. Then, incredibly, I get up and talk. And here's where I ran out of patience, stopped the tape and rewound it. I'm surprised Andrés survived all those (long, drawn-out) words of praise and didn't become a Dying Treasure in the process! Then Kathleen Summit was given her award and speeches. Whew! I don't know who made the Video. Perhaps Bill Knief, of local Taos Cable Station 2 was involved. Bill still lives in Taos and can be contacted at UNM North where he works.
