General

FROM NOW ON (FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS) MOST OF MY JOURNAL PAGES ARE ABOUT HIKING IN HIGH COUNTRY, MOSTLY IN THE WHEELER WILDERNESS WILLIAMS LAKE BASIN. I REPEATED THE SAME HIKE OVER AND OVER AGAIN, TAKING EXTENSIVE FIELD NOTES, ATTEMPTING TO LEARN ONE AREA INTIMATELY. WARNING: THESE ARE MONOTONOUS AND REPETITIVE OBSERVATIONS, WITH OCCASIONAL LOVELY MOMENTS. THEY AREN'T "SCIENTIFIC" OR ILLUMINATING, BUT THEY RECORD A LOT OF HARD WORK AND THEY DETAIL (WAY TOO MINUTELY!) ONE OF MY LIFE'S GREAT OBSESSIONS. THEY ARE ALSO, OBVIOUSLY, RESEARCH NOTES FOR A BOOK I MIGHT WRITE ONE DAY. THEY ARE THE MOST EXTENSIVE (AND REPETITIVE) NOTES I'VE EVER TAKEN, I THINK.
