Little Green Diary, 1956

 File — Box: 142

Scope and Contents

AGENDA DE POCHE. IN FRENCH. 2 and 1/2 x 4 INCHES. Perhaps Mamita gave the blank diary to me as a gift. I LIKE IKE buttons on cover, and 2 photos inside, front, of my puppy love Peggy Hale, 1 foto each of my brothers Tim and Dave, a picture of my Loomis friend Max Terry doing the bop, another of me wrestling with Max, and a picture of me with a switchblade knife. There's a faded Polaroid of a big drawing I did of a voluptuous woman in a bathing suit. And a Loomis Log article about the Taft football game (we lost) with a photo of a play in the game where I identified the Loomis players involved, including me (#30). The article says, "John Nichols made several bone crushing tackles." The diary is written in tiny letters in fountain pen ink and pencil. Every day for the entire year. Life at Loomis. Traumatic process of breaking up with Peggy Hale. Spring vacation at Grandma Gleason's in Montpelier, Vermont. Summer of ugly divorce between Pop and Brownie in Virginia. Autumn of junior year at Loomis. Written in Catcher-in-the-Rye wise-guy slang. The journal lists atop each page every Brooklyn Dodger baseball game during the season, the score, and I highlighted whether the Dodgers won or lost with a smiling or sad cartoon face atop of every page!
