Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The Gloria Montoya Chavez Papers contain articles, clippings, classroom materials, correspondence, subject files, photographic materials, and video recordings. The material documents Chavez’s activist role in the Chicano Movement, as well as her career as an administrator. The bulk of this collection concerns UNM Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services. The collection is arranged in three series:
Personal Papers includes some biographical information, certificates of appreciation, letters of support, records of travels in Mexico and general correspondence.
Activism and Community Involvement is comprised largely of press clippings of various race/ethnic political concerns, such as police brutality, the Albuquerque Riot, the Poor People’s Campaign, the Chamizal Treaty, Reies Lopez Tijerina, and civil right movements in general. Original materials (non-press clippings) include a collection of statements regarding charges of police brutality at Stacey’s Supper Club in Ranchitos, New Mexico (27 August 1971). There are also statements regarding the Pete Garcia trial in Silver City, New Mexico, including a book of notes taken at the trial (author unknown). Garcia was on trial for the March 1969 shooting death of Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Sergeant Julian Narvaez. After three jury trials, Garcia was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1971 and fled to Mexico. Gloria Montoya Chavez’s participation in Jesse Jackson’s New Mexico Rainbow Coalition is also represented in this series.
University of New Mexico Materials is divided into 2 subseries: Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services and Other UNM Materials. Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services was also known as Hispanic Student Services.
The Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services subseries contains administrative and special event programming materials, as well as a photo collection (including slides) documenting UNM Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services (also known as Hispanic Student Services). These photos show students, staff, faculty, and some notable celebrities associated with Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services (also known as Hispanic Student Services) events, such as Reies Lopez Tijerina, Edward James Olmos, and Jesse Jackson. Slides document University of New Mexico events and performances, activities of the Brown Berets in Denver and the Albuquerque South Valley, anti-WIPP demonstrations in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and Teatro Campesino. A video collection for the documentary "Searching," which was developed under Gloria Montoya Chavez’s direction, provides a visual documentary history of ethnic and women’s studies at UNM, from 1965 to 1985. This video collection also documents the history of UNM Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services (also known as Hispanic Student Services).
Other UNM Materials include notes and minutes from the UNM Presidential Advisement Committee, the UNM Staff Committee, and the UNM Ethnic and Women’s Coalitions. Some pedagogical materials are included, in particular related to Chicano/a and Native American students. These materials incorporate counseling and training manuals, articles and bilingual education documents.
