Scope and Content

From the Collection: Most of materials in this collection originate between 1975 and 1988. The majority of materials were received by AREA and retained as resources for the own use. Their interests revolved primarily around nuclear technology and the promotion of its safe usage, although other sources of power were also of interest to them. Consequently, much of this collection deals with nuclear energy and its consequences while other documents describe alternative sources of energy including coal.

This collection is arranged into four series:

Pro-Nuclear Groups contains original materials produced by AREA and their contemporaries including the United States Council on Energy Awareness and the Atomic Industrial Forum. Generated documents include newsletters, reprints, slideshows, news releases, primers, and letters.

Nuclear Technology houses documents related to the development and application of nuclear power. Diverse subjects include reactors, nuclear fuel, nuclear mishaps such as Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.

Energy and Energy Corporations includes pamphlets and flyers produced by major energy producing organizations as well as more specific research compiled by AREA related to energy possibilities and sources. Materials touch on alternative energies, New Mexico energy resources, energy availability, coal and uranium mining and environmental issues.

Nuclear Waste and WIPP were both of paramount interest to AREA. Consequently, AREA assembled materials related to WIPP and other nuclear repositories. This series houses clippings, reports and releases dealing with the storage, transport and hazards of nuclear waste.
