Scrapbooks by Hulsman, 2014

 File — Box: 27

Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection documents the history of athletics and individual athletes, predominantly from Albuquerque High School, but by association, reaching across the State of New Mexico, 1892-2011. The Albuquerque High School and University of New Mexico athletics programs had close ties to each, particularly in the early days. The two teams often played against each other, and many of AHS' athletes went on to become UNM athletes.

Biographical scrapbooks contain collated information about noteworthy athletes who played sports at Albuquerque High School. Included are biographical sketches, written by Coach Hulsman, Dr. Eldred Harrington, and others, as well as pertinent news clippings and photographs. The biographical information follows the lives of these particular athletes beyond their tenure at AHS.

Added to the collection are scrapbook histories of Albuquerque sports related organizations and institutions.

The attached index lists the most prominent athletes and in which scrapbook related biographical materials will be found.

Sports scrapbooks document the history of particular sports played at Albuquerque High School. Basketball and football dominate the series, but there also are scrapbooks covering baseball, boxing, cross country, girls' athletics, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, pentathlon, skiing, soccer, tennis, track, and wrestling. These scrapbooks contain statistical compilations, programs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and other ephemera. Two scrapbooks were added to this series in January 2013: History of Albuqeurque Sports Hall of Fame (1973-2011) and New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor (1988-2011).

The attached index highlights major sports events.

Newspaper account scrapbooks primarily relate to basketball. These scrapbooks, though un-indexed, present a chronological history of AHS sports as chronicled primarily by the Albuquerque Journal and Albuquerque Tribune.

Scrapbooks given to Hulsman by others include 2 scrapbooks devoted to Coach Mickey Miller, one given to him by Coach F. M. Wilson, and another devoted to the career of Thomas Hogan.

Loose materials include clippings, articles, photos, materials pertaining to tournaments and championships, Highland High School, Dawson High School, Capitan High School basketball, and New Mexico high school football, and UNM's Johnson Center.
