Scope and Contents
Includes digital copies on one CD of five albums of photographs taken mostly by J.H. Allison, primarily during his work for the Forest Service in Arizona, 1906-1908, but also including a series of family photographs circa 1919 in Minnesota and landscapes and other scenes photographed in Wyoming, Montana and Ontario, Canada in the 1920s. The contents of the individual albums are detailed below. The CD also includes three portrait photographs of J. H. Allison circa 1900.
- Album I: "Views in the San Francisco Mountains”, circa 1906-1907, with captions. Images depict various aspects of a forestry expedition including camps, landscapes, railroads and logging. Identified locations include Sycamore Canyon, the AL&T sawmill at Flagstaff, the Petrified Forest, Thomas Place in Oak Creek Canyon and Rogers House. 25 images total.
- Album 2: The majority of the images pertain to forestry expeditions around Flagstaff, Arizona, 1907-1908, with handwritten captions. Locations depicted include Oak Creek Canyon, Lockwood Spring, Secret Mountain, Camp Verde, Stoneman Lake, Montezuma’s Castle and Well, Kehl Springs, Myrtle, General Springs, Pine, Clear Creek, Tonto Natural Bridge, Pivot Rock. Also depicted are sawmills and grist mills, logging and timber operations, surveying, fishing, railroads, wagons and jerkline teams, cornfields, expedition camps and hunting (including a killed mountain lion and her cubs), work crews and recreation. Includes a number of images of unidentified people and places, and one photo identified as Nat Allison in Springfield, Massachusetts, 1904. Some domestic, residential and office scenes. 91 images total.
- Album 3: “Views in the San Francisco Mountains”, with handwritten captions and an inscription to Mrs. and Mr. E. Allison, July 4, 1907. Views of Flagstaff, residential areas, AL&T sawmill, ATSF railroad, a Navajo (Dine)/Tuba City mail carrier on horseback, Rogers Lake, members of the 1906 Supervisor’s Convention in Flagstaff. Includes images of expedition teams and camps. Includes some duplicates of photos in other albums. 26 images total.
- Album 4: “Grand Canyon of Arizona”, seventeen photographs of the canyon with handwritten captions, plus a personal inscription from J. H. Allison to his brother, Nat, July 4, 1907. Images depict a descent on Bright Angel Trail to the Indian Gardens and the river dated February 24, 1907, with additional views on Grand View Trail. Includes photos of mules and camps. For three images, only the captions remained in the original album; the photographs are absent. 18 images total.
- Album 5: Includes a series of family photos, circa 1919, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Also includes a series of photographs from Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada, 1926, and another from Wyoming and Montana in 1928, including locations in Yellowstone Park. For a number of images, only the captions remained in the original album; the photographs are absent. 47 images total.
