Tape 1, 1953.

 Item — Box: 1, CD: 1

Scope and Contents

This recording begins with an introduction in English by an unidentified male speaker. The speaker indicates that the tape includes a number of recordings made by Ed Ladd in 1953, most of them with “Old Man Edaakie”, Mr. Ladd’s grandfather. The first recording is of a coyote story. The second is an account by Mr. Edaakie of the last battle with the Box S Ranch Rustlers--in the 1880s or 1890s--involving Zunis, Anglos and Mexicans. The story is recounted with humor and singing among a group of Zunis. Next is a recording of children dancing and singing. Following that is a recording of Mr. Edaakie singing some Comanche-type songs, primarily the Dog Dance. Finally, Mr. Edaakie sings some traditional Zuni grinding songs. The singing begins at approximately 30:00. Total running time is 33:50. Except for the introduction, the entire recording is in Shiwiʼma, the Zuni language. The original tape reel is labeled R1 T1.
