Scope and Contents

Folder comprises photographs and documents pertaining to the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Fort Wingate. Photographs consist both of photographs and of photocopies and copies of photographs. The photographs dated 1903 depict the Fort Wingate enlisted men’s baseball team, officers, troops, and fort buildings. One photograph depicts a Zuni stick race. A 1907-1908 photograph depicts Fort Wingate commanding officers and wives. Five photographs depict Fort Wingate in 1918-1919. Typed descriptive labels for many of the above photographs have been preserved in photocopies of the photographs with their corresponding labels. The folder also includes a photograph and brief biography of Ordnance Depot employee and WWI veteran Manuel Landavazo and a 2x2-inch photograph of employee George Yazzie. Includes a copy of a Ben Wittick photograph of Rattlesnake Rock and a portrait of John Pershing. Includes photocopies of War Department documents creating (1870) and extending (1881) Fort Wingate and a transcription of 1862 military orders. Includes a copy of a 1936 letter from Harold Ickes, Secretary of the Interior, to the Federal Bond and Mortgage Company of Gallup. Also includes ‘Historical Program Fort Wingate Centennial’ (1960), with an inserted typed chronology of Fort Wingate.
