Scope and Content

From the Collection: Collection consists mostly of photos relating to T. M. Pearce, his family, colleagues, and friends, including Mary Austin, Alice Corbin Henderson and Witter Bynner. The collection also includes photos related to the folklore and history of New Mexico. There are photographic copies of Spanish manuscripts and paintings of various Dukes of Albuquerque, maps, and fragments of murals at the Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque consisting of narratives from the Coronado expedition (murals removed in 1920). Event-related photos include a snapshot (ca.1930-35) of a truck representing the Museum of New Mexico/School of American Research in a parade passing in front of the Palace of Governors. Others show Santa Fe Fiesta, a Shalako ceremony at Zuni Pueblo in 1934, and the First American Pageant in Albuquerque (1931-1933, including Apache Devil Dancers). There are photos of the Fred Harvey Indian Dept. building, wood carvings and Kachinas, and an Indian Detours tour car near Taos. Architectural subjects include churches (various pueblos, St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe and St. Francis of Assisi in Ranchos de Taos, and Mary Austin's "Casa Querida." Slides depict ruins, landscapes, shrine at D. H. Lawrence Ranch, Enchanted Mesa, St. Francisco de Assisi church, and the Santuario de Chimayo, as well as Kit Carson and Charlie Bowdre's gravestones. Some of the photographs were taken by Ernest Knee in Santa Fe and the Kolb Brothers Studio in Arizona.
