Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The collection consists of photographic memorabilia of the Old West, primarily concerning outlaws and cowboys. Many photos concern the exploits of Black Jack Ketchum and his gang and include photos of his execution by hanging. Others show cowboys working longhorn cattle on the range at the Cross-L Ranch in Union County and the Prairie Cattle Co. and life in their camps. There is a cityscape of Clayton, NM, showing the main street with wagons and buildings (1891) and an office interior. There are photos of Maxwell Ranch and grist mill, Clifton House stage station, the jail, courthouse, and the interior of the St. James Bar in Clayton, NM. There are also pictures of Mexican wolves caught in traps and one diagram of the Lake Cattle Co. brand. Album 1 contains mostly duplicates of prints in Folder 2. Albums 2-5 contain photoprints of rural houses, farmsteads, and schools. Prints are 8 x 10 inches or smaller.
