File — Box: 1, Folder: 3
Scope and Content
From the Collection:
Photographs showing extremely impoverished living conditions of Hispanic Americans and African-Americans then living in the areas of Albuquerque, N.M. known as Barelas and Arenal, and in the town of Los Lunas. Material collected for Vogel's publication Barelas, Arenal, and Los Lunas: a photographic essay on poverty in New Mexico,1967. Children and ramshackle adobe dwellings, some lacking roofs, are the subject of many of these images. Others show family groups and a young Hispanic couple. One photo shows the re-plastering of a dwelling; another the construction of a home; and one a simple, but well-preserved, adobe residence. There is also a photograph of a flooded street. Prints are 8 x 10 in. or smaller.
"Los Penitentes" is the title of a small booklet containing photographs of Penitente rituals, a morada structure, and the yucca whips called "disciplinas." The booklet was published by Cosner Selling Co. of Denver and copyrighted in 1931. On the cover, it is written that the photographs were "taken years ago in New Mexico". The photographer is not identified.
