Scope and Content

From the Collection: The papers of Peter Nabokov, writer and newspaperman, contain manuscripts, notes, recorded interviews and newspaper articles. The bulk of the collection relates to research and writings about Reies Lopez Tijerina and the Tierra Amarilla land grant. The collection contains articles from the Santa Fe New Mexican, The Albuquerque Journal, The Albuquerque Tribune, and various other newspapers and magazines published during the 1960's and 1970's. The notes Nabokov made for his articles, as well as transcripts of some tapes, and extensive notes for the trial of Reies Lopez Tijerina are included.

Drafts of the manuscripts of three books by Nabokov are included. One book, Tijerina And The Courthouse Raid, is based on notes, interviews, and clippings found in boxes 1-3. Two Leggings, is based on the field notes of William Wildschut, who interviewed Two Leggings, a Crow warrior, in the 1920's. Materials relating to this book are in box 4. Book reviews of the two books are in the collection, as well as the correspondence of Mr. Nabokov with his publishers.

Box 5 of the collection contains audio recordings of interviews with Reies Tijerina and others involved with Alianza Federal de las Mercedes (La Alianza). Also included is an audio "tour" of a community health clinic, La Cooperativa y La Clinica del Pueblo, in Rio Arriba County, and a recording of a meeting held during a Santa Fe newspaper strike, 1968.

Box 6 has various newspapers from the 1960's dealing with Hispanic, or Spanish-American issues, plus a special section of the Sunday Santa Fe New Mexican, edited by Nabokov.

A 2018 addition to the collection contains research materials relating to Nabokov's publications, Origin Myth of Acoma Pueblo and How the world moves: the odyssey of an American Indian family (2015).
