Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The collection consists of James S. Wroth's diary and five telegrams. The diary begins in 1916 and includes entries and notations dated as late as 1933. It contains several small newspaper clippings concerning events in his life and in the life of his father, Dr. James H. Wroth (1855-1924). In addition, the diary reveals personal comments on events of particular days, inspirational notes, and banking information; there no information related to Wroth's engineering career in the diary. The telegrams are dated between 1924 and 1926. They were sent by James S. Wroth and his brother William B. Wroth to their mother and grandmother on the occasions of Christmas, New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, and Mother's Day. The telegrams are illustrated for each occasion.
This collection was originally titled, Atlantic and Pacific Railway Papers, 1880-1933. It included photographs related to the Atlantic and Pacific Railway Company and its construction through New Mexico, pictures of New Mexico landscapes, Albuquerque cityscapes, and Native Americans, particularly at Acoma and Laguna Pueblos, and some pictures from Juarez, Mexico. The photographs were taken by James H. Wroth, the father of James S. Wroth. The senior Wroth worked as a surgeon for the Santa Fe Railway (which took over the Atlantic and Pacific Railway Company in 1893) and took or acquired the pictures during his employment with the railway. The photographs are housed in CSWR Pictorial Collections, and retain the original title, Atlantic and Pacific Railway collection.
