 File — Box: 1

Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection contains records from the District Board Number One, State of New Mexico, U.S. Selective Service, headquartered in Sante Fe. The district board members included Charles Springer, Chairman, James Massie, M.D. Secretary, and members H.B. Karr, Antonio Lucero, Harry Bowman, Milton Helmick and Felix Garcia.

The first part of the collection consists of exemption claims. The claim forms were filled out by the draft board and divided into "Dependent" and "Agricultural" claim forms. Each form asks a number of questions as to the number of dependents, occupation, income, home ownership, encumbrance on property, types of crops or livestock raised, numbers of acres under cultivation or size of livestock herd. Each record is classified and marked approved or denied. The name of the person applying for the exemption is not included on the reports.

Twenty eight photoprint sets of county draft board records comprise the second part of the collection . Specifically, the sets are rosters of inductees sent by New Mexico and the initial Federal War Department receiving form.

The collection was previously called U.S. Selective Services System, New Mexico Draft Board records. The collection is not sorted or categorized in any way. All records are in English.
