Loose material from minute book,, 1907-1908

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 2

Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection contains minutes of regular and special meetings of the Roswell Local 511 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, January 1906-July 1908. The minutes illustrate how the union was involved in setting wage scales and negotiating contracts for construction employees. In March 1907 the members voted to send representatives to speak with Dr. Veal to see if they could convince him to use union men to build his ball park and skating rink. Later that same year they granted a permit for men to work on the Johnson Warehouse on S. Main St. and the Christian Church roof from the hours of 7-11 in the morning and 2-6 in the afternoon.

Since the union had a recording secretary and a financial secretary, there are no financial reports in these minutes, however there are notations indicating amounts to be sent to sick members and fines to be gathered from union members. The union seal has been stamped on page 85 of the minute book.

The loose materials found in the minute book are housed in a separate folder. The material includes an amendment to bylaws, special meeting minutes (1907 and 1908), application for membership, and request for sick benefits (1908), among other notes.
