Scope and Contents

Richard Martinez, resident of Martineztown since the 1930s, discusses the Martineztown urban renewal/relocation project of the 1970s. The conversation includes comments about commercial zoning and its ramifications to residences, planned obsolescence by the City, and the issue of moving Albuquerque High School into the neighborhood. He speaks about the character of Martineztown and the role of the Citizens' Information Committee, a local grassroots organization whose purpose was to get accurate information out to residents about their options. Richard Martinez touches on the value of homes and the assistance given to the residents by UNM's Design and Planning Assistance Center. He discusses the march on City Hall, which showed city-wide solidarity for the residents of Martineztown and brought broad attention to their plight. Martinez also discusses the legal and political processes involved in fighting the original urban renewal/relocation plan. He brings the discussion into the 1990s, illuminating some of the more current problems and projects in the community.
