Scope and Content

From the Collection: The East Mountain Oral History Project collection consists of interviews conducted by Joyce Mendel with the following residents: Jose Candelaria, Bob Cooper, Adilia Garcia, Leandro Garcia, Barbara Herrera, Tom Herrera, Bill Loudon, Andres Mora, Antonia Mora, Dorela Perea, David Salazar, Jacquelyn Schaefer, M. Zanettie and Vicki Scoresone. The interviews are in a combination of English and Spanish languages. The collection also includes a tape of reminiscences from Alejandro Herrera, recorded in 1980. There are transcripts for all except the Zanettie and Scoresone interview. Additionally, the collection contains background research materials such as a project description, photocopies of handwritten songbooks, articles from and copies of selected issues of the East Mountain Telegraph, narratives about East Mountain history, and a photocopied diary of Charlotte Ellis. The diary discusses family life on homesteads during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

The interviews examine topics relating to the cultural and historical heritage of the East Mountain area. Topics such as land, land grants, kinship, influenza epidemics, school, family and local history are discussed. The sociological impact of religion and religious customs, including penitentes is also relayed.

Audio interviews with Mae Skinner Adams, Jacobo and Margarita Armenta, Lucia and Ernesto Candelaria, Nieto Maldonado Chavez, Florinda Crist, Maria Dresser, Avelino Garcia, Celestina Garcia, Felix Garcia, Lorenzo Garcia, Anselmo Gonzales, Eralia Gonzales, Rose Gutierrez, Tom Herrera, Celia and Rutilio Jaramillo, Dorela and Roberta Perea, Dulcinea Sanchez, and Molly Simballa were added in October 2012. Transcripts and other documentation were also added at this time, both in paper and electronic (cd) format. Note that there are files (but no audio) for Mercie Herrera Chavez and Jose Herrera, and Marian and Harold Rider.

Additional digital photographs on CD were added in July 2013 along with a CD containing descriptions of those photos.
