Scope and Content

The bulk of the collection documents K. Rose Wood's career in social services in New Mexico. The collection contains correspondence, clippings, publications, reports, brochures, legislation, and notes.
The collection is divided into six basic categories:Aging, Vision, Hearing, Speech Public Health and Welfare, Youth, Juvenile Affairs, Recreation, Criminology Personal/Personnel, and Public Service and Community Involvement. Aging includes state, federal, and general materials pertaining to committees, commissions, MSS 596 BC Wood Page conferences on aging, as well as legislation, programs, resources, and services. Vision, Hearing, Speech consists largely of materials pertaining to school testing, with general information as well as data specific to Hobbs and Gallup public schools, the Santa Fe Indian School, and the Intermountain Indian School (UT). This section also contains general materials, class notes, and information about rehabilitation and handicapped programs. K.'s involvement with the New Mexico State Reorganization Committee and with various social programs in New Mexico is documented in the section, Public Health and Welfare. The relatively small section on Youth, Juvenile Affairs, Recreation, Criminology contains information that deals with the problems of youth and juvenile delinquency, as well as clippings about crime and materials about the New Mexico State Penitentiary. This segment of the collection contains materials related to Wood's work on the Governor's Advisory Committee on Recreation. Personal/Personnel includes biographical information, as well as employment-related correspondence and records. This portion of the collection contains research and correspondence relating to Wood's educational endeavors. The final series, Public Service and Community Involvement, contains materials from various service organizations. These include the American Association of University Women and the New Mexico Federation of Women’s Clubs. There are also some New Mexico legislative documents.
Additional material was added to the collection in 2008. Contained in boxes 4 and 5, it includes documents that are listed under these series: Aging, Public Health and Welfare, Personal/Personnel Information, and Public Service and Community Involvement.
Photographs have been transferred to the Center for Southwest Research Photoarchives, although many of them have been photocopied for the manuscript collection.
