Scope and Content

From the Collection: Santa Fe Indian School: The First 100 Years Project consists of 51 cassette tapes comprising 31 oral history interviews, 27 transcripts, photocopies of photographs (the originals are held at SFIS), the exhibition catalog, One House, One Voice, One Heart: Native American Education at the Santa Fe Indian School, and assorted biographies, correspondence, and clippings. There are no cassettes for interview numbers 6, 11, 24, and 27. There are no transcripts for interview numbers 6, 24, 27, 31-35.

The bulk of the material is from Pueblo people, but the collection also includes Navajo, Apache, and non-Indian material. The informants were Santa Fe Indian School students, employees, and teachers. The collection addresses such subjects as Indian student life, federal school policy, school adminstration, tribal and community involvement, and survival of Indian culture. A preservation copy of all cassette tapes are in the CSWR vault; duplicate tapes for research use are in this collection. All interviews were conducted in English.
