Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection contains 17 oral history interviews on 21 audio cassette tapes. In addition, there are 19 detailed tape logs, one for each of the recorded interviews and 2 additional transcripts for interviews that do not have audio tapes.

The interviews in this collection were undertaken as research for Sandra Schackel's dissertation. Schackel interviewed New Mexico women involved in public health, New Deal welfare programs, and politics during the 1930s and 1940s. The interviews took place during the years 1986-87. Major subjects discussed by Schackel and her informants include public health, welfare, the depression, and federal programs such as the Works Progress Administration and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. In addition, the women discuss their roles in organizations such as the Red Cross and local social service groups. Of particular note are interviews describing African-American women's organizations in the Albuquerque area.

Original tape recordings are housed in B2. Patron use copies are housed in the collection.

An addition of one unprocessed box was added to the collection in February 2021. The addition includes cassette tapes of interviews with women in social services throughout the American West, diskettes with transcripts, postcards and photographs, and index cards with notes and photos. The addition is shelved on B3-3A.
