 File — Box: 2, Folder: 14

Scope and Content

From the Collection: This is a collection of materials pertaining to the national and local "neighborhood movement" during the 1970s and 1980s. The materials were collected by Raymond E. (Tim) Butler. Butler was an active member of Albuquerque's Spruce Park Neighborhood Association, the Sycamore Park Neighborhood Association (which included members of the Spruce Park and Silver Hill Neighborhood Associations), and the Sycamore Citizens Redevelopment Task Force (a committee appointed by the City Council in 1981 to get views on the need for declaring the Sycamore area a Metropolitan Redevelopment Area). The collection also includes materials relating to the Coalition of Albuquerque Neighborhoods (CAN), an organization created by neighborhood leaders in 1977 to be an active advocate for neighborhood issues.

The primary goal of the neighborhood movement was to ensure community involvement in the process of planning for "rational growth and development". The neighborhood associations were concerned with topics such as planning, zoning, water, public schools, and traffic. In Albuquerque, there was tension between the neighborhood associations and the City Council concerning how much power the neighborhood associations should have. This issue is documented through newspaper articles and correspondence within the collection.

The collection contains notes, reports, newsletters, publications, news clippings, petitions, surveys, correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas. It contains general organizational materials as well as information about the national neighborhood movement and Albuquerque's neighborhood movement in general, with a specific focus on issues pertaining to the Spruce Park and Sycamore Park areas.
