Scope and Content
From the Collection:
This collection consists of title abstracts (often including maps) from many parts of New Mexico, particularly Bernalillo County, dating from the late 1800's through the 1970's. The collection is divided into 2 series: SERIES 1 consists primarily of title records from the additions and subdivisions of the city of Albuquerque. SERIES 2 consists mostly of the rural tracts of land in New Mexico, organized into divisions by county and township. Certain rural tracts may be located in Series 2 or in Series 1, specifically those in the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District. Records indicate passage of land ownership through sale and inheritance as well as land and city development. Many of the records apply to rural tracts of land particularly those listed as the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District and certain land grants such as the Atrisco Grant. More urban tracts are listed by name of subdivision or city addition, and are broken into separate lots for each document. Most of the urban tracts of land are located within the city limits of Albuquerque, but some describe developed tracts within smaller towns in more rural counties.
The company which held the majority of the records in the collection changed names and ownership several times. Most of the records from outside Bernalillo County originated in smaller towns and in companies located in these towns. The records included in this collection were owned by the Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation, but the original abstract research was not necessarily done by them.
Researchers, especially those looking for rural tracts of land, should bear in mind that many tracts could be categorized in a number of different listings. So, if one is searching for a particular township, for instance, s/he should also check for the tract under the respective county or counties before becoming discouraged. If one cannot locate a tract of urban land based on subdivision name, searching for the tract under the addition name may prove fruitful and vice versa.
A large addition to the collection was made in March 2002.
A small addition to the collection was made in November 2003.
