Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The collection consists of the manuscript for In the Cause of Progress: A History of the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association by Robert K. Mortensen, which was published in 1983 by the New Mexico Stockman. The main difference between the manuscript and the publication is that citations and notes appear to be more prolific and complete in the manuscript. The manuscript text is annotated with notes in the body of the work, rather than more generally at the end, as is the case with the publication.
In the Cause of Progress documents the history of the Association as well as the issues of concern to cattlemen in New Mexico from 19141979. Drought, disease, the meat packing industry, predators, National Forests, the public domain, the military, etc. are all issues that the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association have been actively involved with since the organization's inception.
