Scope and Content

From the Collection: The collection consists of correspondence between the editor of First Person, Morton Elevitch, and assorted authors, including Douglas Woolf, Curtis Zahn, David DeJong, Joseph Heller, Jean Claude van Itallie, Edward Gorey, John Voelker (a.k.a. Robert Traver), Archibald Macleish, Robert Creeley, Thornton Wilder, Vera Nabokov (writing on behalf of her husband, Vladimir Nabokov), Allan Seager, Edward Dahlberg, Donald Barthelme, George V. Higgins, Rosalyn Drexler, John Updike, C.P. Snow, Thomas Berger, Henry Miller, and Warren Miller. These items of correspondence address the possibility of contributing written works to this journal. Reviews of the early issues of this journal are present in the collection, as are examples of the volumes produced. These volumes include diary material by Thornton Wilder, letters between Mark Twain and W.D. Howells, excerpts from novels, travel observations, social commentary, and autobiographical sketches (including one of Ford Madox Ford).

Correspondence regarding permissions to republish certain works as well as letters about pen-names are also included. Biographical or autobiographical data for some contributing authors can be found in this collection. Press releases and clippings announcing the journals publication are housed in this collection, as are original manuscripts by several of the contributing authors.
