Embroidered panel, 1912
Item
Scope and Contents
Winged etruscan horse with figures of a man and a woman, embroidered panel worked by D. H. Lawrence and Frieda Lawrence, in Barda Italy. Presented to Gladys Fisher at the Lawrence Ranch in Taos by Frieda Lawrence on July 4, 1937, on the "Day of the Fox." On that day, Gladys Fisher delivered to Frieda the figure of a fox that she had sculpted for a niche in the Lawrence shrine. Alan Fisher reports the following conversation of Frieda, "They made a small panel of embroidery, quarreling all the time over the technique and design. It rained and rained. Finally, the panel was finished even though he had unraveled much of her work. The entire result was destined to become a symbol of this part of their lives together. The symbol was carried closely with them ever after while he lived."
