Scope and Contents

This diary opens with the classes "First Grade Program," or schedule for the day. The following pages contain short 3-4 line stanzas or stories on topics ranging from "Our Newspaper" (daily classroom events), "Nancy the Doll," or "Blackie the Kitten." These short stories are found throughout the and increase in complexity as the year progresses. The teacher attempts to involve the class in reading lessons and on occasion comments that the students would "prefer to chatter". Assignments, mainly construction paper drawings and related words, are included throughout the diary, along with numerous "Yes/No" exams. The teacher includes a class history where she evaluates individual children. Special units include safety, farm activity, and gardening. The teacher concludes with a list of "language errors" and grades.
