Scope and Contents

The majority of notes in this journal place students in high and low categories within each grade. The diary is organized by date/week. Student grades are recorded in detail and include discussions of exam questions, grade averages and commentary on progress reports, handwriting, study skills, grammar, and sentence structures. The journal records field trips, such as the symphony. It contains commentary and observations from art expositions, information about clubs (Portfolio Club), letters and correspondence from students, lists of subjects of interest, notes on a radio broadcast sponsored by the Junior Red Cross, student written plays as well as scattered notes on deportment and manners. The journal closes with a commentary on the entire year. At the rear of this diary is a small collection of student made magazines and drawings concerning a wide array of topics which include but are not limited to: rubber, sports and games, model citizens, home sanitation, courtesy.

Prior to being granted access to the collection researchers must sign the attached consent form, agreeing not to disclose information that would be an invasion of privacy of living individuals, not to divulge names of individuals mentioned in the diaries, and to hold harmless and to indemnify UNM and its employees for any loss or damage to them occasioned by the release of the informational content of these materials. This restriction expires January 1, 2050.
