Victoria Davis de Sánchez, Nambe School - Grade 8,, 1941-1942

 Item — Box: 20, Diary: 5

Scope and Contents

This diary opens the third week of school and contains a list of all the students and their level (A, B, C). In the open discussion of the students there is a reference to not believing old superstitions. Some of the students have also received glasses and other medical care. Much of the journal is dedicated to topics that revolve and flow around water issues: purification, the water cycle, conservation, irrigation, etc. Like other journals, this one includes vocabulary lists, lists of questions by topic, detailed descriptions of student progress. Unlike the others, there appears to be increased discussion of the war. There is also more discussion of Christmas in Nambe. Much of the second half of this journal is dedicated to critiques of students, their academic and 'social' development, grades, and scores. There are several letters to New Mexico government officials, and surprisingly, an Alaskan school.
