Mary Belle Zillmer, San Jose School - Grade 5, 1935-1936

 Item — Box: 16, Diary: 1

Scope and Contents

This diary contains excellent monthly outlines which detail reading assignments, arithmetic, spelling, grammar, directed reading, citizenship, and health. There are also detailed charts, put together by the teacher and students, which give suggestions for courtesy, writing styles, and story-making. Throughout this the teacher quotes and cites from other books in her lesson plans, and periodic enrollment sheets. A blank survey is included, though its purpose is not explained. Several student written stories are included in this diary. In the center of the diary is an excellent record of books checked out during the year. There are student written diaries, though they appear to be only individual assignments rather than full diaries. There is also a long list of vocabulary words learned versus those "actually used," both written and spoken, by the groups. This diary includes letters written to council members, mayors, and chambers of commerce of major cities requesting information on each respective city. There are short natural science sections on subjects such as bees. The diary closes with extensive and detailed notes on the students, along with case studies and test results.
