Vera W. Cornelius, San Jose School - Grade Pre-First, 1936-1937

 Item — Box: 5, Diary: 1

Scope and Contents

In the opening of the diary, the teacher comments that all students are non-English speakers (no record if they speak Spanish, Tewa, or another language). Students must be 5 years 6 months old to be in this class and the teacher suspects that many are younger than the required age (this is later confirmed with a visit to the clerk's office). This teacher records toys played with, when books become interesting, what vocabulary is learned (and at what pace), and how mucic is understood. There are also detailed case studies of each child. These studies record items such as name, age, health and "appearance," interest in language acquisition, personal habits, interactions with other students. Most entries are from the start and end of the academic year. Other items in the include vocabulary lists, academic exercises, "home units," stories, songs, and free or directed activities. Many drawings and projects were kept by the teacher and can be found in the accompanying the diary.
