"Player Of The Alien gods" Southwest Review, Vol XIII #3, Summer 1957.

Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection consists of 21 pieces of Woolf's writing. It contains numerous short stories published in journals, one book review, and several chapters (published in installments in a literary journal) of his novel John-Juan. The post-war experiences of former soldiers figure into more than one of his manuscripts. His protagonists are often marginal figures, underdogs, people who lead unglamourous lives, or outsiders fraught with confusion, delusions, or disappointment in life. The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Literature in English explains the relative obscurity of Woolf's characters and themes by the fact that "his understanding of the world was far in advance of his society's." This relative obscurity as well as the variety in Woolf's writing is evident in the writings which comprise this collection.
