Remittance Ledger of M. Brunswick, 1872-1927

 Item — Unboxed-volume: 20

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Marcus Brunswick business records collection contains correspondence related to Marcus Brunswick's freighting business. Four boxes of documents date from 1866 to 1900 and include mortgage and deed papers, promissory notes, inventories, and records of business transactions for which Brunswick was financier or guarantor. A majority of the correspondence is between Brunswick and Trinidad Romero, proprietor of Trinidad Romero & Sons. There is also a file of transaction notices between Brunswick and J.A. Forbes, General Manager of the Western Mortgage and Investment Company of Kansas City, MO concerning Romero & Sons. Other items in the collection include day books, ledger books, check books, cancelled checks, check stubs, and business product catalogues. One file includes personal items unrelated to the business, such as church notices and programs from orchestral recitals.

The collection also contains twenty-six unboxed items, including Brunswick's ledgers, letterbooks, and checkbooks. Additionally, there are six letterbooks of Judge and later Territorial Governor William J. Mills, dating from 1899 to 1909. Mills's letters refer to personal business transactions as well as legal matters and court cases pending in the New Mexico Territory. Mills was involved in writing the New Mexico State Constitution in anticipation of the granting of statehood to New Mexico in 1912. The remainder of the unboxed items include business records of the Old and New Mexico Improvement Company. There is also a daybook belonging to Felipe Chaves, merchant in Belen, New Mexico.

Ledgers and daybooks are in Spanish.
