Scope and Content
From the Collection:
J. B. Tanner had G. Edwin Holmes appraise the market value of Yah-ta-hey, N.M., as of October 1, 1968. The appraisal included 130 acres of land, with its associated improvements, including a supermarket, Indian store and pawn shop, 2 existing service stations, completion of two proposed service stations, a business office, restaurant, laundromat, barber shop, seed and feed store, piñon processing and bagging facilities, a cattle shipping depot, cattle and sheep holding pens for a cattle trading operation, a used car lot and garage, a used auto parts operation, 10-space trailer park, and therapeutic hot bath. The market value was appraised at $700,000.
The appraisal suggests that the most profitable use of the property would be as an area trading center, including a tourist hotel complex and a manufacturing complex that would tap into the Indian labor pool. Yah-ta-hey's location between Gallup and Farmington, and at the junction leading to Window Rock Tribal Headquarters, Fort Defiance, Canyon de Chelly, the Hopi Reservation, Grand Canyon and other Indian dwelling concentrations and tourist attractions gave it tremendous potential for development and profit-making.
The appraisal contains demographic as well as statistical data and commentary about Navajo social and cultural life as well as describing the potentials for tourism and other avenues of economic development. The appraiser interjects a negative commentary on Gallup, New Mexico.
The appraisal contains black and white photographs of the landscape and the "amenities" of Yah-ta-hey. This collection has previously been known as "J. B. Tanner Notebook."
