Scope and Content
From the Collection:
This collection consists of one three-page, bound, typewritten document pertaining to Juan Baptist Coca, resident of Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. The document, dated 1898, outlines Cocas burial request (in which ceremony and how the mass should be held) and includes his last will and testimony. This document is valuable to researchers with regard to inheritance patterns of the time. In his will, Coca specifies that he has five living children (of a total of nine) and one wife. He left his property (land and house) to only two of four living sons. His daughter was not named in the will. The remainder of his property, not specified as being left to two sons, was left to his wife. The document is in English, but is peppered with Spanish words in common usage at the time in New Mexico (including land measurements and architectural terms).
