IV. General Correspondence, 1944-1959.

 Series

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The papers of Ernest W. Tedlock relate mainly to his research and general interest in D.H. and Frieda Lawrence. Reference to works and projects concerning other literary figures such as Dylan Thomas and John Steinbeck are a minute portion of this collection but underscore Tedlock's interest in a particular literary period.

The collection itself is divided into six series and reflects Tedlock's scholarly interest in the study of D.H. Lawrence. The first series is entirely composed of typescripts and drafts of his published works (1945 and 1948) entitled The Manuscripts of D.H. Lawrence: A Descriptive Bibliography and The Frieda Lawrence Collection of D.H. Lawrence Manuscripts: A Descriptive Bibliography. Also included in this section are the working galley proofs and corrections for a 1964 work, Frieda Lawrence: Memoirs and Correspondence.

The second series is primarily research material devoted to his publications about the Lawrences covering the time period 1890-1980. Of particular interest in this series are the copies of Frieda Lawrence correspondence that Tedlock was able to collect.

Tedlock's personal correspondence with close friends of the Lawrences such as Witter Bynner (1948-1975) and David Garnett (1957-1978) comprises series three.

Series four includes general correspondence for the period 1944-1980 with other friends and associates of the Lawrences. The most important part of this section is the publication correspondence maintained by Tedlock for the works on the Lawrences and on the poet Dylan Thomas.

Series five includes glimpses of various poets and poetry projects in which Tedlock took an interest. In particular, Inscape Magazine, a local poetry magazine and the creation of the San Marcos Press by Tedlock reflect his interest in the promotion of local and regional poetry.

The final series consists of miscellaneous D.H. and Frieda Lawrence material and includes reviews of Tedlock's works, lists of D.H. Lawrence material compiled by Frieda after his death and typescript revisions of Lady Chatterley's Lover, which are undated but were probably given to Tedlock by Frieda Lawrence.

The collection is comprised of a 1945 donation (Series I) and a 1984 donation (Series II - VI). A small addition made in 2002 contains a few publications by Tedlock.
