Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The first item in this collection, the Sandia Pueblo land deed, is a photocopy of the original, handwritten legal document which outlines the transfer of land (whose exact boundaries are specified) from Pablo Salasar Noriega to the Sons of the Pueblo of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores y San Antonio de Sandia for the price of one thousand dollars. The document explains that Pablo Salasar's father, Antonio Salasar, was the original owner of this land, and guarantees the rights of his heirs to maintain irrigation ditches there. The document, from 1772, is signed by Lt. Baltazar Griego as well as Pablo Salasar, Joaquin Romero and Juan Gonzales. The original is housed in Folder 2.
The second item is a handwritten document, from January 30, 1830, which is a declaration of the debts and assets (including land and a house) of Lorenzo Gonzales. It appears, from this and related documents, that this was a custom of the time.
Documents are in Spanish, though a typed translation of the land deed is also included in the collection.
