Scope and Content
From the Collection:
This collection consists of English and Spanish language documents conveying information regarding the sales of land in New Mexico during the Mexican and Territorial periods. Documents include letters, contracts, and papers dealing with Albuquerque North Valley plazas and land grants (Los Candelarias, Los Griegos, Los Ranchos, El Rancho, and the Antonio Sandoval land grant). Among the landholders listed in the sales is Juan Cristobal Armijo, a prominent New Mexican in political circles in the mid-1880s. Additional documents in this collection reflect land sales in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. The collection also contains one letter from the Bishop of Durango, 1791, granting permission for a friar to marry a couple related to one another in the fourth degree on consanguinity.
This collection was previously known as Spanish and English Manuscripts, 1791-1887. In June 2000, the single letter comprising MSS 212 (Pedro Silva collection) was transferred into this collection (Folder 3)
