Scope and Content
J. O. Seth (1883-1963) and his son Oliver Seth (1915-1996) both served on the Managing Board and the Executive Committee of the School of American Research. The papers include correspondence regarding the School, 1947-66; some miscellaneous legal papers relating to land, leases, quitclaims, and a variety of other matters; correspondence with Mitchell Wilder; documents of Executive Committee Meetings, 1951-62; reports from the Museum of New Mexico (Fine Arts, Anthropology, and Folk Art); some correspondence regarding occupation of the Hewett House; and papers from the Selection Committee for Museum Director, 1955-1957.

Biography
J. O. Seth (1883-1963) was a member of the Managing Board of the School of American Research from 1934-1950. He was born in Maryland on March 17, 1883, the son of James and Julia (Orem) Seth. He received a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1903. He married Bernice Grefe on March 15, 1910, and had two sons.
J. O. Seth came to New Mexico from Washington D.C. where he was an attorney in the General Land Office. He began his law practice in Albuquerque and moved to Santa Fe in 1917. He was the senior partner in the law firm of Seth and Montgomery.
Oliver Seth (1915-1996) was the son of J. O. and Bernice (Grefe) Seth. He was born in Albuquerque on May 30, 1915, and died on March 27, 1996. He graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in 1937, and received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1940. He returned to Santa Fe in 1940 to begin his law practice but his career was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army from 1940-46. He again returned to Santa Fe where he was in private practice from 1946-62. He then was appointed by President Kennedy as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in 1962, becoming the Chief Judge from 1977-84. He had senior status on the Court until his death in 1996.
Oliver Seth was elected to the Managing Board of the School of American Research and the Executive Committee in 1950 when his father resigned from the Board. He served as Secretary (1953-1964) and Vice President (1965-1969). In 1973 he was made an Honorary Fellow.

Processing Information
The smaller AC33 Oliver Seth Collection was merged into AC05 to become what is now the J.O. and Oliver Seth Papers. The folders previously forming this AC33 collection have been placed at the end of the AC05 files and are now numbered AC05.39 to AC05.55. Their AC33 file numbers are given in the title of each file.
The SAR correspondence files continue with the files from AC33 which have been integrated into AC05 and are found at the end of this list. There are three correspondence files, AC05.40, formerly AC33.021, is the first and includes correspondence from 1962-1963. AC05.41, formerly AC33.022, has correspondence from 1964-1969, and AC05.42, formerly AC33.023, is the final file and has correspondence from 1970-1973.
Later SAR Executive Committee Meetings records are found with the files from AC33 which have been integrated into AC05 and are found at the end of this list. Two files include these records: AC05.43, formerly AC33.024, and AC05.44, formerly AC33.025.
