Scope and Content

Papers include correspondence re the lab of Anthropology, 1927-1949. Correspondence covers the arrangements for establishing the Lab, donation of property to and financial support for the Lab, coordination with the University of New Mexico regarding the Lab's establishment, donation of Lab land to the U.S. National Park Service, and other miscellaneous legal matters. Included are various documents re land, finances, and contracts concerning the Indian Arts Fund collections and their commingling with Lab collections, and Museum of New Mexico and School of American Research correspondence.

Biography or History

Francis C. Wilson (1876-1952) moved to Santa Fe in 1907, practicing law from 1907-1942. Throughout his career he served on numerous government boards and commissions related to interstate water compacts, public domain, and Pueblo Indian interests, helping to defeat the Bursum Bill among other efforts. He was one of the organizers of the Indian Arts Fund in 1925. Wilson was attorney for Martha and Amelia E. White and, as a partner of the DeVargas Development Company, donated land for the Laboratory of Anthropology, Inc., the Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Art (Wheelwright Museum), and the National Park Service building on Old Santa Fe Trail. He was on the boards of the Laboratory of Anthropology and the School of American Research. In addition to his law practice, Wilson had extensive oil interests in the area around Hobbs, NM, through the Wilson Oil Co.
