The collection includes photographs of boarding schools, people, and places taken during Margaret E. Laird's time as teacher at Indians Schools in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Lawton, Oklahoma, and Rice Station, Arizona. Also included are images of people and school buildings in Santee, Nebraska and Fort Mojave, Arizona. C.C. Stotz, a photographer based in El Reno, Oklahoma Territory, created some of the images; the other photographers are not identified. The prints are gelatin silver prints and cyanotypes.

Margaret Eleanor Laird was born on January 17, 1870 in Waverly, Iowa. She was a teacher in boarding schools for Native American children in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Lawton, Oklahoma, and Rice Station, Arizona, between approximately 1895-1905. She changed her last name to Voetter after marriage. Margaret Voetter died on April 2, 1958, in San Diego, California.
