Scope and Content

The Howard Bryan Collection contains approximately 200 prints (many are copy prints) and a few negatives related to Bryan’s personal life and career as a journalist, and to historical New Mexico subjects and events. Highlights of the collection include original photographs of New Mexico ghost towns (ca. 1958 - 1970), as well as holiday parties with esteemed guests (ca. 1960s - 1970s).

Biographical Information

Howard Bryan was born in Delaware, Ohio, on March 25, 1920. After attending Ohio State University and serving with the U.S. Army Signal Service in World War II, he began a storied career in journalism. In 1948, Bryan began working for The Albuquerque Tribune, where he covered stories related to New Mexico frontier history in the popular column “Off the Beaten Path.” He wrote seven books of New Mexico history, including Incredible Elfego Baca: Good Man, Bad Man of the Old West (1993), which won the Western Writers of America Spur Award. Not incidentally, Bryan was also known for hosting lavish Christmas parties at his home in Albuquerque’s Old Town, which were attended by journalists, authors, artists, cowboys, and politicians.
